Hey guys, I’m going to do a series of posts about what I’ve learnt while making this site…first I’m gonna tell you a bit about domain names.
A domain name is the name for your site, so for this one it’s “techforteens.com”. You have to buy these, or if you set up with something like word-press, it will be something like “myblog.wordpress.com”. Our domain name cost £16.78 for two years. We bought ours from Low cost names and we got a discount (Yay Mum). This is called a registrar.
A domain name is an easy way for a person to find a website, computers use IP addresses. An IP address looks like (note this is not a real one) 123.456.789.123 but you can have less than three numbers in each slot, no more.
Next up you sort out hosting. If you sign up to wordpress.com or somewhere like that then they do a package with hosting in it. But for us…My Dad did it, he does hosting and this kind of thing, that’s his job.
Hosting is were someone gives you a slice of space on a server on the internet. A server is what you store files in. So there’s a big computer somwere with lots of websites on it!
A name server is where your browser looks to find the IP address to find your website…and you need to set one up
Then you take the IP address, put it in the name server at the registrar (the people who sold you the domain name). This is editing the DNS (Domain name system). And edit the IP address to go to where your sites being hosted.
You can get packages on things like wordpress that do most of this for you. For my blog I have one…and that works just fine.
The next “Starting out” coming soon.
I hope I’ve taught you something, and that you enjoyed my article.
